Night Running with a Friend

The temperature is dropping here and now hovering just above the freezing mark, in fact we have had a few initial snows that didn’t stick around. I do not like the cold. I have been running on my treadmill in the mornings before work – typically a half an hour and usually barefoot.

However, the other night I ran with a friend at night. Overcast but still, no wind and about 4 degrees. My buddy had a headlamp – let me tell you this thing was awesome – I was sceptical about their effectiveness but it gave us a full breadth of visibility. I will be investing in one shortly!

We ran a nice 4K in 27 minutes. We chatted and had a really nice time. This was the first time that I have run with anyone but my wife Amanda. I wasn’t sure how it would go because I typically have to think and focus on my running – but it was a very enjoyable experience.

Without a doubt my weekly kilometers are down from what they have been. This has been a bit psychological more than bad physically I think – I believe the lower kilometers have given my body a chance to catch up and heal a bit.

I have Monday off to observe Rememberance day – both kids and my wife have to go to school and work. I will be home alone – my plan is to run 50k!

I am nervous and excited. I started carb loading yesterday and have been thinking about my route and strategy. I am going to treat this like my 50 miler coming up next June. I will run 16k (or 10 miles) and walk for a bit. The plan is to experiment with different walking times/distances.

I will use my house as an aid station and have different nutrition and hydration options ready (and maybe a chair!).

It is supposed to be cloudy and 5 degrees tomorrow – I don’t have a proper running sweat shirt so I will just use a hoodie I have – will be a bit of an experiment – but since my house is an aid station I will have additional clothes available.

Happy running!
